Nguyen Xuan Anh

Nguyen Xuan Anh

Artist

Nguyen Xuan Anh is an emerging artist who began his career paying homage to his father, who was considered one of the best lacquer on wood artists in Vietnam. Those initial pieces employ traditional subjects using a variety of earthy colors such as red, yellow and brown. As Nguyen’s artistic visions evolve, his more recent works depict the changing Vietnam as well as pastoral scenes of blossoms, trees and landscapes using ink on paper. He has an astounding ability to mix the traditional with the modern. Nguyen Xuan Anh was born in 1977 in Hanoi, Vietnam and graduated from the Industrial Fine Art College in 1999. He has exhibited extensively in the United States, Singapore, and China.

“I love to follow the idea East meet West. It means I may use Western concept such as American Abstract expressionism, contemporary  thinking of some artists who I really like: Jackson Pollock, Wolf Kahn , Alexander Calder… I stayed at Wolf Kahn studio at Vermont studio center, while I participated in an art residency there for a month in 2008. In contrast, I also like Eastern culture, Vietnamese traditional lacquer techniques, ink on paper, ink wash paintings…
After many times participate at international art exhibitions in Shanghai, art biennale Beijing, Soeul, Tokyo… I love to combine all of culture I have visited in my painting with my thinking about Vietnam contemporary social.”
